Spending time reading manufacturer documentation across several categories produces a pattern that is hard to unsee: the specification that most reliably predicts whether someone keeps using a product is almost never printed on the box, and it is usually not hidden — it is simply not flattering enough to promote.
In coffee machines it is cleaning time. The number of parts that touch milk, and whether they go in a dishwasher, predicts whether a machine is still on the counter in March better than any number about pressure or grind steps. Manufacturers publish part counts in the manual and lead with fifteen bar on the box, which tells you which of the two they think sells.
In vacuums it is parts availability. A machine whose battery can still be replaced in year six costs dramatically less to own than one that cannot. What makers publish is the current spares listing, which tells you what exists today; what almost none of them publish is how long they intend to keep supplying it, and that is the figure you actually need.
In headphones it is clamping force, and here the honest answer is that nobody publishes it at all — we checked all three flagship manufacturers. It is the specification that decides comfort past the third hour, which is precisely when people discover whether they bought the right pair, and there is no number for it. Weight is the closest published proxy, and it is a poor one.
In monitors it is USB-C power delivery in watts. A screen advertising a single-cable laptop connection that supplies sixty-five watts will not keep a working laptop charged under load, and the figure is always published and almost always buried.
In running shoes it is how long the midsole holds its properties. Outsole durability gets quoted because rubber is easy to measure; the foam above it dies first and far more quietly.
There is no conspiracy in this. Marketing leads with the numbers that compare well, and every one of the specifications above compares badly for someone. The practical response is not cynicism but a habit: before buying anything, ask what the failure mode of this product category actually is, then go looking for the number that predicts it. It is usually in the manual, and the manual is usually a PDF away.
