Commercial

How we make money

Plainly: there are no commercial links on this site today. When there are, they will earn us a commission, and this is exactly how that will work.

This page is published before it is needed, on purpose. Today the site carries no affiliate links at all; when it does, you should be able to read the arrangement here rather than discover it later.

The arrangement is the ordinary one: when you follow a link to a store and buy something, the store may pay us a percentage of what you spent. You pay the same price either way — the commission comes out of the retailer’s margin, not your total.

Which links pay us

Every commercial link on this site is marked in the page source with rel="sponsored" and routed through our own redirect, so it is machine-readable as commercial. Links to sources, standards bodies and our own pages are not commercial and are not marked as such.

What it does not affect

It does not affect which products appear, which one a comparison recommends, or the order they are listed in. Those follow from the specifications the manufacturers publish, and a store paying a higher commission does not move a product up the page. We do not publish scores at all, so there is no score for it to influence either.

Why we tell you

Because a recommendation you cannot audit is worth very little. If the money ever starts shaping the verdicts, the honest thing is to say so — and we would rather build something where that never becomes the question.
