How to read a monitor spec sheet

The headline numbers are real. They are also rarely what makes a screen pleasant to work at for eight hours.

Monitor specifications are unusually good at hiding the things that decide whether a screen is comfortable to work at. Resolution, refresh rate and response time are all real measurements, and none of them is the first thing you should read.

Panel type comes before every other number

Panel type comes first, because it constrains everything else. IPS gives accurate colour and wide viewing angles with mediocre contrast — blacks look grey in a dark room. VA gives deep blacks and worse motion handling. OLED gives you both, along with a burn-in risk that matters specifically for static interfaces: a toolbar, a taskbar or an IDE sidebar displayed in the same place for eight hours a day is exactly the pattern that causes it. A monitor for spreadsheets is a different purchase from a monitor for games, and panel type is where that difference starts.

Pixel density is the number nobody quotes and everybody notices. Divide horizontal resolution by screen width in inches to get pixels per inch. Below roughly 95, text looks coarse and you will see individual pixels in letterforms. Above about 140, you will want display scaling, which is fine on modern operating systems and still occasionally awkward on older software. A 27-inch 1440p panel and a 32-inch 4K panel land in similar, comfortable territory. A 32-inch 1440p panel does not, and it is one of the most common regretted purchases in this category.

Which published numbers to trust

Response time as published is close to meaningless. Manufacturers quote the fastest grey-to-grey transition achievable with overdrive at a setting most people never enable, and often at a specific brightness. Refresh rate, by contrast, is honest: 144 Hz is 144 Hz. If you care about motion clarity, trust the refresh figure and ignore the response figure.

Colour coverage is worth reading only if you know which space you need. Ninety-nine per cent sRGB is the meaningful figure for general work and web design; DCI-P3 numbers matter for video. A monitor advertising a large percentage of a wide gamut can still be poorly calibrated out of the box, and calibration is not something a spec sheet reports.

The connectivity figure that is always buried

Finally, connectivity, which changes daily life more than any of the above. A single USB-C cable carrying video, data and ninety watts of power to a laptop transforms how a desk works. Check the wattage specifically: many monitors advertise USB-C power delivery and supply sixty-five watts or less, which will not keep a working laptop charged under load. The figure is always published and often buried.
